New Research Shows Exercise Makes You Smarter!
In case you need another reason to exercise, check out the March 26,2007 issue of Newsweek Magazine. Titled Exercise and the Brain, it focuses on the latest research showing exercise can not only make us smarter, but also increase memory and decrease the likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s, I highly recommend you read the article for yourself, but I will highlight a few important points for you below:
- New brain imaging tools are allowing scientists to find the mental effects of exercise to be much deeper than ever thought.
- Two chemicals build up in the body with regular exercise and allow nerve cells to communicate in new and exciting ways.
- A new study found the human brain does in fact grow new nerve cells after a three-month workout program, when it was once thought impossible to form new nerve cells.
- Scientists found exercise to actually allow older nerve cells to form dense webs that allow the brain to work faster and more effectively.
- Studies show people that exercise at least a few times a week develop Alzheimer’s less often and later compared to those that do not exercise.
- Researchers have found the learning and memory center is greatly improved and specifically a part which is associated with the ability to match names and faces! This effect can be seen almost immediately, but an exercise program must be maintained to continue the benefits.
